How the Terrified Troll got his Courage

Day 79

There was once a terrified troll who lived in a big cave. This troll was afraid of everything especially going to sleep at night. You might think that trolls are mean and scary and not afraid of anything, but that is not true. Some trolls are nice, some people think that they are one of the reasons the phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover” was invented. Because if you have ever met a troll, and you probably never will, you would know that they are just like everyone else, and they sometimes get scared too. Well especially this troll who lived in the cave. His name was Fred. Poor Fred got so nervous that he chewed on his nails, and he shook in his big boots, and he whined, and he cried. But that was all until one day he learned a special magic trick, well it was not really a magic trick, but it was magic advice, which is like a magic trick, but different, because usually you have to be a magician or have an assistant to perform a magic trick, but when you just take magical advice from some magical creature, well you can do that anywhere, no assistance needed. Well this troll Fred received his advice from a very kind fairy, who would fly from cave to cave, around the forest and over the rainbow. This fairy had been many places and knew many things and was extremely knowledgeable on many things, because once you have been over the rainbow, you become vastly more intelligent. This fairy told Fred that in order to stop being afraid, the troll must sing a song, or think a happy thought, or when it came to getting ready for bed the troll must decide that he was the biggest baddest troll and that nothing could terrify him, because he was so strong. Well Fred thought, I do not feel strong, and I do not feel big or bad. Well the fairy said, “Do not worry Fred, you are thinking way to much about other things. In order not to be scared you must think about how strong you are, not about how strong the other things are. Imagine all the ways you are strong, and that you are in fact the biggest baddest troll. What would you do, where would you go, and if you ever feel afraid, you must just think about yourself instead” So, taking the fairies advice, Fred decided to think about himself, and he noticed that he felt better, and his feet were shaking less in his boots. He started working out too. That is how the terrified troll, became the buff troll.

Day 44

Once upon a time there was an apple who lived at the top of a very tall apple tree. The apple tree had been living on the farm for a long time, and because the tree was so old it had been growing taller and taller every year. When this particular apple was born he was born very close to the top of the branches and inside all the high up leaves. He grew up for a long time at the top. All the other apples would look up and chatter about how much higher this apple lived then the rest of them. Well every apple knew that after they grew up they would be picked by the farmers, and if they did not get picked in time they would fall down down down right until they hit the ground. Sometimes the farmers would pick them up, but some of the apples who fell down to the ground never did get picked up by a farmer. The apples who fell to ground whined, and called up to the apples on the tree, saying I wish I’d gotten picked it is no fun to fall down on the ground. So it happened that this apple knew from all the apples that if he fell he would fall very far and he hoped that a farmer would pick him. One day this apple looked out above the apple trees and saw the farmers walking with their baskets towards the tree. “The farmers are coming” he cried out. He wished they would pick him. The ladders we put up against the tree, and a suddenly a great big hat was right next to the apple. Then a big hand grabbed him wrapping big fingers around his belly. He had been picked! The apple knew that he did not have to worry about the fall, all his worry was for no reason. Inside the basket with the other apples, he was carried away from his home in the tree. He was very happy and looked forward to life off of the apple tree.

Day 39

Once upon a time there was a little girl who was nervous about going to school. This little girl’s name was Ginger. She had never gone to school before and did not know what school was going to be like. Her mom told her that she was probably going to have a lot of fun and that she would like school. But Ginger was still nervous about school. On the night before her first day, her mom picked out her very favorite outfit to wear. Her father told her about his first day of school and that he had a nice teacher named Mrs. Plum, who gave the whole class cookies on the first day which is why he decided to go back the next day. Ginger’s father told Ginger that she would probably have a nice teacher too. The next day while Ginger was getting ready for school a fairy appeared in her room. She was so surprised to see the fairy who had on lots of pink and had wings and a big tiara on her head and even a magic wand. The fairy asked Ginger if Ginger had any wish that could happen during her first day of school that would make the day better. Ginger was so surprised that she could not think of something that great so she just said she would like to see a Barbie movie. Well, then all the sudden POOF the fairy disappeared! Ginger thought that the fairy must have made Mrs. Plum have cookies there on her fathers first day. Ginger had never heard about the first day of school fairy, but she supposed some kids just made wishes, and that the first day fairy must not visit every single kid. Ginger thought she was probably like Santa, some kids just must write down a list or something and the fairy showed up because Ginger had forgotten to write down her list. So then Ginger was more excited about going to school. Ginger’s mom drove her to school, and when Ginger got to school, she saw some of her friends! Ginger was happy, because that made her feel a little better. Ginger met her teacher and she was nice too. They talked about colors and read a few books, then all of the sudden the teacher asked if anyone would like to watch a Barbie movie before nap! Ginger raised her hand and smiled when she thought about her first day of school fairy. After the movie they took a nap and then she had her lunch and then played a game with her friends. Then she went home. Her mom asked her how her first day went and she was so happy. Ginger said she had a lot of fun and from then on Ginger loved going to school.

Day 29

Once upon a time there was a beautiful city in the middle of a great big forest. The city was the most amazing place in the whole world, but it was very difficult to get to, or to get out of, because of the forest that surrounded it. One day a baker decided that she wanted to bake a very big cake for her sons birthday. The baker’s son had just finished his school year and graduated passing all of his classes with the highest honors. The baker went to the store to get some of the ingredients that she would need, but when she got to the store the man told her that they did not have the flour, or the eggs, or even the sugar in stock. “How was she going to make a cake for her son’s graduation?” she thought. The baker was very upset, because she knew that she would have to travel out of the city, through the forest, if she wanted to get the eggs, sugar and flour that she needed for her cake. the baker decided that she would make the trip through the forest. She was nervous, because she had never been out of her city. But the baker knew that people did go through the forest to get things for the market and for the stores inside of the city. So she packed a very small suitcase and began walking. She walked and walked. Over stumps and ducking under great big tree limbs. She jumped from rock to rock even though they were covered with moss and some were slippery. She saw all different kinds of forest animals that she had never seen before. Deer, squirrels, birds, foxes and frogs. She saw a good amount of frogs living inside the forest, and a lot of squirrels. But they were all very busy and did not pay any attention to the baker. Finally, after three whole days the baker got out of the forest and was only one mile away from the next town where she would find a store that sold the ingredients she would need to bake her cake. She went into the town and found the store and she purchased the flour, eggs and sugar. The baker packed them very carefully in her napsack for her trip back to her beautiful city. She was a little worried that the eggs could get broken during her journey back, but she packed them very carefully so they would not fall or get smashed while she walked.  Fortunately for the baker, her eggs did not get broken during her three day trip back to her city. Once the baker arrived home, she began baking her cake. She made the most wonderful cake that surely anyone had ever seen. This cake was the best cake on earth. She decorated the cake with bright blue icing and wrote a sweet message to her son right on top of the cake. After the baker finished the cake, it took her 2 whole days, she put it in a box to take with her to her sons graduation party. When she got to the party, her son was very busy with all of his friends. He refused to try the cake that his mother had made. Now, her son did not know this about his mother, but she has some special magical powers, but she never used them, because she did not have time to use them. Magic takes a lot of time and energy and the baker would rather spend her time baking cakes. But the poor baker had been traveling for 6 days and baking for two, and she decided that magic would not take very much time compared to her whole time she spent journeying through the forest and making the cake, so she decided to teach her son a lesson about not eating cake that his mother made him specially for his graduation. The baker cast a spell on her son turning him right into a tree frog. Her son was a tree frog in the forest for 14 days. Two weeks her son spent as a tree frog, and then he turned back into a human, and his mother greeted him at the side of the forest, and said, “you spent all this time learning from the best professors in all the world, if none of them could teach you any manners, I hope that being a tree frog did.” and the bakers son, apologized to his mother and said, “I will not be so rude mother, I am sorry, I’d rather you be a baker instead of a tree frog maker,” and they both lived happily ever after.

Day 27

There lived a queen named Isabella. She had a special power. Isabella could look out over her whole kingdom and find the people who were the very best at anything. She could find these people when they were just little babies. Isabella kept very good watch over her kingdom and when she looked out of her window and saw a new baby with an amazing talent, queen Isabella would make a trip to the home of the baby. When Isabella got to the home of the baby, who was born with a special talent for greatness, Isabella would reach out and bless the baby in the name of her kingdom. Isabella would say to the parents of the child, “Your child is a blessing, I can see even now that she will grow to be an amazing painter, Bless her gifts to grow for our Kingdom, so all of us may see her beautiful artwork.” Or if Isabella found a baby boy who would one day grow up to be an amazing cook, Isabella would journey to the home of the little one and say, “Your child is a blessing, I can see even now that he will grow to be an amazing chef, Bless his gifts to grow for our Kingdom, so all of us may try the delicious food he cooks.” Isabella could find the talents in all the children and they were told by the queen how special they would be at one thing or another. In the kingdom when the queen came to the home and blessed the child to be great in the kingdom, the parents would then raise the child to study in the schools to cultivate their talent. If queen Isabella told the parents that their son would be a wonderful chef, then the boy’s parents would be required to send their son to culinary school. If queen Isabella told the parents of a baby girl that she would be a beautiful ballet dancer, then the baby girl’s parents would enroll her in dance lessons as soon as she could walk. This was how the kingdom grew to thrive and have the best cooking, and the best art that filled museums and lined the walls of the castle. People would come from far and wide to see the ballet dancers perform their shows and the gardens that had the most gorgeous flowers in all of the lands. Here the people were nourished by the best fruits and vegetables that the talented farmers grew to sell in the markets. The land was peaceful and thriving. Everything was going well, until one day a mysterious man in a cape, who had a very long beard and caravan of men with him drove their wagons into the kingdom in search of the queen Isabella. He seemed to be of great importance so the generous queen agreed to meet with the man. Isabella offered him to stay in her castle’s guest houses and agreed to have the man and his company to eat with her and her court at dinner. The meal was prepared from the best fruits and vegetables, and the it smelled like the most delicious food you have ever smelled in your entire life. Everyone in Isabella’s court was interested to see who the traveling man was, who brought with him wagons and a group of men. Isabella thanked her court for attending the honorary dinner, and gave her compliments to her chef. Isabella wore the most beautiful gown and luxurious furs, and her shining gold crown, and she said to her guest, “We are happy to have you here, please eat from our table and enjoy dining with us this evening. Please introduce yourself to our court and tell us of why you have made your journey.” The man stood up and his long grey beard almost reached the floor, and his green cape shown like emeralds around the dining hall. He drew a deep breath and exhaled, and as he did a green smoke came out of his mouth and flew into the face of the Queen. He said not one word, but after he exhaled, he and his men disappeared, leaving Isabella’s court in an uproar. But above the questioning court, and the gasps of her friends, Isabella’s piercing scream could be heard. “I’m blinded!” said the queen, and she fell on the floor in great sadness, covering her eyes. Her knights rushed to her side, and the castle doctor was called. Try as they might even the best doctors in her kingdom could not figure out what had happened to their queen. Isabella ordered that the identity of the caped man be immediately found and a group of her best soldiers were made ready to go search far and wide to discover the identity of the man. Isabella sat in her castle blinded for months, awaiting word from her men about the identity of the green caped man. Isabella’s men had been searching the surrounding kingdoms, asking anyone they met for clues to the where to find this evil man. Poor queen Isabella, worried everyday about her kingdom, and feared that she would never see again. Finally one of her soldiers, who had stopped at an inn for the night, heard a group of men talking about the caped man. The soldier alerted his guard and they surrounded the group of men at the table. The soldiers ordered the group to give up the identity of the caped man, and that the group tell them how to fix the eyesight of their beloved queen. The men finally told them that the caped man was very difficult to find. They said he lived much further than any of the soldiers had ever traveled before, in a land of mystery, a land where evil people were everywhere. The soldiers were nervous about making this far journey, but their love for their queen inspired them to find their courage. The sent one of their soldiers back to the queen with word that they had found the man they were searching for. The rest of her men, armed themselves for battle, because they did not know what they would find when they found this caped man. They traveled for days, and meanwhile queen Isabella prayed for her men to have courage and find the caped man and give her back her sight. Each day the soldiers journeyed closer to the location of the man, the road became darker and more troublesome. The group became more fearful, and worried, but finally they arrived. They found the caped man, and put in him chains and threw him in a cage they had brought with them to serve as a jail cell. They sat around him that evening, all protected their faces with masks to keep from being blinded by the green smoke. They told the man their queen was blinded that they must get back her vision. The man, opened his mouth wide, and out came a small girlish voice, “why do you want to help your queen?” the green caped man said. “We love our queen and will serve her until the day we die, she has known her kingdom since we were babes, and knows our strengths and encourages us in our work. She is most loved in our country and who are you to question us about our love for our queen. Why have you blinded our beloved queen Isabella? The answer is of no importance to us, because regardless of however you answer our question you must reverse your evil magic and return the sight to our queen.” The green caped man spoke again, “I come to question the kings and queens of the countries. I live in an evil land, full of wrongdoers. It is my job to make sure that they Kings and Queens of the kingdoms are most loved by their people for being good to their people and are not ruling through trickery or magic. If you had come to me and your queen was using magic to trick you into loving her, the magic would not work here, only your true feelings toward your queen can be shown in my land. Because you have made your journey in truth, to defend your queen, I will grant her back her vision. But you will never come back to this evil place again. You will never know how to find the green caped man.” Instantly the soldiers were back in Queen Isabella’s castle. They heard Isabella joyfully talking with her court. “I can see!” the queen said, happily. The queen was grateful to soldiers who made the journey to return her vision, and she had a great feast prepared for them. Queen Isabella created a special ceremony for her soldiers and all of the kingdom was in attendance. Queen Isabella knighted each of the men, and gave them their own horses and all new homes, and each a bag of gold for their families. All of the kingdom rejoiced for their queen. Isabella ruled for many, many years and her kingdom was the most beautiful and prosperous one in all the lands. The kingdom and queen Isabella lived together in peace and happiness and never feared for the green caped man.

Day 26

Once upon a time there was a little bird. This little bird was a robin, and her name was Finn. Finn loved to wake up very early. All of the other robins got up early as well. In the morning, all the birds were hungry and wanted to eat breakfast. Robin’s usually ate worms for breakfast. Before the sun came up each morning Finn would stretch out her wings very wide, and sit up in her nest and look out into the dark. Even though the sun had not woken up yet, Finn knew that it was morning. One day, Finn overslept. Finn did not wake up before the sun, and she did not wake up when the sun got up either. Finn slept so late that it was almost midday before she was even awake. Finn was tired, but she did not know why. Finn was not feeling so well either. Her stomach was rumbly and her wings were tired and achy. Finn decided to take her temperature. Finn found out she had a high temperature, and when she was awake so late, and her stomach was rumbling, Finn knew that she was sick. “Ouch,” thought Finn, “I do not want to be sick.” So Finn decided to stay in her nest for a while. She nestled into her home, and she did not fly out of her nest for two whole days. Finn slept and slept. Finally Finn started to feel better. Finn flew around a little and her tummy did not rumble as much. She spent her whole afternoon coasting through the air. That night Finn thought to herself, “I know I am going to feel better tomorrow.” And the next morning Finn woke up before the sun was up, early in the dark morning. Finn got out of bed and flew to the ground where she grabbed up the best worm she could find. She took her worm back to her nest, where she had a great big breakfast. Finn felt much better and every day from then on she was up early getting her big worms for breakfast and flying through the air during the day.

Day 19

Once upon a time there was a sting-ray. His name was Anchor. Anchor was about 15 years old. Anchor lived in the Caribbean Sea. Anchor had heard about a concert that was going to come to the coral reef near him. He was so excited, it was his very favorite band, The Crustaceans, and they were going to perform live. “Wow! If I can only convince my parents to let me go to this concert!” thought Anchor. Anchor decided to ask his parents if he could go to the concert. His parents said, “Anchor you can go to the concert, just make sure you are home in time for dinner!” Anchor replied, “Great! Thanks so much mom and dad!” So Anchor began getting ready to go to the concert. When he got to the concert there were a whole bunch of other sea animals there, almost all the sting rays from his class were there, along with all the crabs and dolphins. A few of the marlins went to the concert too, and a ton of grouper fish were there. The concert was so fun and The Crustaceans were amazing, but all of the sudden came a big hungry shark! “Ahhhhh, swim for your lives!” some of the fish cried. There was panic and everyone was afraid. Swimming here and there, and in the middle The Crustaceans had grabbed all their instruments and were swimming as fast as they could away, but the shark was coming right for them. Anchor saw what was happening and darted through the water to help protect The Crustaceans. They were his favorite after all. He swam and got right in front of the shark and put his stinger out. The shark was mainly just hungry and did not want to fight with Anchor, so he swam the other way. “Whew, that was close!,” said the members of the Crustaceans, “Thank you so much for saving us!” “What is your name?” they asked Anchor. “My name is Anchor,” anchor replied. He was still a little afraid of getting in the way of that big shark. The shark had so many teeth, and they made Anchor’s stomach feel upset. He told the band that he was happy he saved them, but that his mom and dad had probably heard about what was happening at the concert and that they would be worried about him. “It was really great meeting you guys,” said Anchor and he swam home. When he got home he was not hungry for dinner, but he told his parents all about standing up to the shark and saving the band. Anchor’s parents told him how proud of him they were and said that they hoped he would always be so brave. Not very many other fish were as brave as Anchor. Anchor still gets afraid sometimes, but he knows now how to be brave, and does not ever let any sea monsters, sharks or anything else make him worry.
